Alaskan Malamute Sires from Candy Rock Kennels

Will a dog fit into Your Lifestyle?

Some people feel that their families aren't complete without a dog. Others are single and believer a dog can give them the companionship they crave at home. Dogs do make wonderful family members but there are things you should consider before rushing out and bringing a puppy home.

Once you bring home a dog, you are responsible for him for the rest of his life. He will look to you for his needs. They need daily attention.

Dogs make wonderful companions. They listen to your troubles without making sarcastic comments. They offer love and understanding. They are playmates for you or your child.

To be fair to the dog and yourself , you should consider carefully whether or not he would fit into your lifestyle. Questions follow:

1. Do you live in an apartment or own your own home?
Malamutes are not the breed for an apartment, not a condo. They get very restless and destructive if not able to be outside.

2. Are you away from home a lot?

3. Do you enjoy going for daily walks or runs?

4. Do you have small children in the home? Malamute puppies can be from 40 lbs at 6 months of age to 90lbs. They are still pups but can be clumsy and knock down adults, children even easier. They get nosy when the child is crying or screaming. Will get in their face. Also the floor is their play area so what is on the floor is there for the dog to play with, even small children.

5. Can you afford to buy food and the vet care?

What is good about the breed. Great deterrents to burglar's. They will not bit them but can scare someone. They are great for people that like to be outside. They are a working dog so they need to be worked. At least running. The will dig up your yard. And although they can be know to killing small animals like cats, small dogs they have no problem with killing mice, snakes, rats, raccoon's.

They are :
Powerful. Intelligent, proud, graceful, elegant, and independent.

Although very protective of their family and home, Malamutes are very gentile with Children.  They will follow small children everywhere and make great playmates as long as the child is not really small, under 2 years old.

They are know barkers. But they love to talk. Some owners swear that their dog say" I love you" or "Mama".

They are also know for their work ethics. Alaskan Malamutes are able to pull the heaviest loads and can travel long distances with very little food. They are great sled dogs, fishing, hunting, weight pulling, and make the best friends a person could have.

Preventive is always suggested but should be talked over with a vet. A lot of the other the counter medications and usually not as effective and run a higher risk of side effect, such as seizures and hot spots, just to name a few. If your pet has been infested with fleas it maybe also suggested that he or she be treated for tape worm.

Ticks:

Also should be discussed with veterinarian. Ticks can care lyme disease and you should be sure your animal is vaccinated against that as well. Most flea preventives also cover ticks as well.

Tapeworms:

Dogs can come in contact with tapeworms from infested soil or fleas. Stronger in hunting dogs that kill and eat wild game. Signs of tapeworms are vomiting, hunger or weight loss and irruption or rubbing of the rear. A stool sample should be taking to the veterinarian and examined. Generic dog wormer do not usually help, medication should be obtained through a vet.
